Bilingual (Spanish-English) Human Rights Contract Attorney (remote)

JOB DESCRIPTION

CAL is seeking a Contract Attorney who is fluent in English and Spanish, comfortable with a diversity of tasks, and has experience working with impacted communities in the Global South. The Contract Attorney will report to the Executive Director. The ideal candidate is highly organized, self-motivated, and passionate about human rights and corporate accountability. 

The contract has an initial duration of 6 months, with the possibility of extension depending on funding. The Contract Attorney will be expected to work approximately 25 hours per week, for a total of 100 hours per month, with some flexibility on allocation of hours week-to-week. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Contract Attorney will work closely with our partners in Spanish-speaking countries, including nonprofit organizations, unions, lawyers, workers, and other impacted community members. They may also engage with US and foreign government representatives. They will be involved in litigation-adjacent activities, regulatory compliance, legal research and writing, and should have the ability to engage in conversations with other attorneys about litigation strategy.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • JD or LLM from a US or foreign law school;

  • At least 1 year of legal experience in public interest work, ideally human rights, environmental, labor, or a related field 

  • Written and spoken fluency in English and Spanish (must be native or near-native fluency in both languages);

  • Strong legal research and writing skills;

  • A demonstrated commitment to human rights and corporate accountability;

  • A demonstrated ability to interact with a variety of stakeholders, including impacted communities from a trauma-informed perspective, partners, and advocates from diverse backgrounds;

  • Excellent organizational, administrative, and communication skills; 

  • Willingness to help, follow through, and attention to detail;

  • Ability to be flexible and take initiative; 

  • Analytical and creative problem-solving skills;

  • A sense of humor and willingness to engage in uncomfortable conversations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency in Haitian Creole; 

  • Licensed to practice in a US jurisdiction.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The contract attorney will be paid $4,000 per month.
